Best Time to Book Flights in 2026

When to book domestic vs. international flights, the truth about dynamic pricing, and a simple rule for finding the cheapest fares.

Booking a flight at the right time can shave 20–40% off the fare. But the "right time" depends on where you're going and when you're flying.

For domestic flights in the US, the sweet spot is 3 to 7 weeks before departure. Inside three weeks, prices climb steeply — airlines know last-minute travelers usually have to fly.

For international flights, push that window out to 2 to 5 months ahead. Trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific routes see the steepest pre-booking discounts.

Day of week matters less than people think. The old "book on Tuesday" rule is mostly outdated — modern airlines use dynamic pricing that updates throughout the day. What still holds: flying on Tuesday or Wednesday is usually cheaper than weekends.

A simple rule we tell our users: if the price for your dates is at or below the historical average for that route, book it. Trying to time the absolute bottom usually costs more in stress than the $30 you might save.
